The fact-checking site Snopes recently revealed the truth behind an article that went viral about former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick becoming an ambassador for the much-boycotted brand Bud Light.
An article published on September 11 appeared on Esspots claiming that Kaepernick took a deal with Bud to help the brand out.
The beer company is still dealing with a PR nightmare after partnering with TikTok star Dylan Mulvaney this spring. Mulvaney is a transgender woman. Social conservatives boycotted Budweiser after the partnership.
Kaepernick seems like the polar opposite figure for Bud Light to try and partner with after the Mulvaney controversy. NFL owners boycotted Kaepernick after he took a knee to protest police brutality.
However, the Esspots article written by Alex Robin leaned into Kaepernick’s kneeling past:
“At a press conference held at the Bud Light Castle (because every beer needs a castle), Sir Drink-a-lot, the self-proclaimed King of Beers, made the grand announcement. “After our recent… let’s call it a ‘misstep’ with Dylan Mulvaney, we realized we needed someone who embodies the spirit of Bud Light – refreshing, bold, and unapologetically authentic. Enter Colin Kaepernick.”The room, filled with reporters, influencers, and a few jesters (because, again, Bud Light Castle), was abuzz. Was this the same Kaepernick known for his iconic kneel? The man who had become a symbol of both athletic prowess and social activism?”
The rumor of Kaepernick joining Bud Light’s team went viral after SpaceX Fanclub’s Facebook page posted the article.
Snopes responds to the Colin Kaepernick rumor
Snopes did a deep dive into the published story to see if there was any truth to the rumor. According to Jordan Liles with Snopes, Bud Light did not hire Kaepernick as an ambassador, and the viral story was meant to be satirical:
“However, this story was not true. SpaceXMania.com describes its output as being satirical in nature, both on its “About Us” page and as a label above articles.”
Bud Light wouldn’t make sense to hire Kaepernick as an ambassador in the current political climate. Bud Light’s sales are down nearly 27 percent this September from last September. The company would be at risk of turning off more thirsty customers by teaming up with another polarizing figure.
