Every year around this time you here the same old debate. How much should your starters play in the preseason? There are a lot of variables to consider with each player, and team when asked this question. There may not be a right answer, but there certainly are wrong ones. Coach Eberflus is taking the right approach with preseason.

    Everyone needs the warm up.

The NFL is unmatched when it comes to speed, and intensity in team sports. Some of the best athletes in the world are flying around smashing into each other. I don’t care how many years someone has played in the NFL, everyone needs the warm up of preseason. Some coaches, like Matt Nagy prefer to baby certain players in attempts to keep them healthy and not play them a single snap. That’s a terrible approach, you end up using the first couple games of regular season to knock off the rust. That’s why I was so happy to hear coach Eberflus say the starters would play a good amount. Injuries are inevitable in the NFL. When you try to avoid them that’s when the seem to happen the most. Play your starters and let the chips fall where they may.

    The old formula

There used to be a formula in the NFL almost every coach stuck too. Game one play your starters the first quarter. Game two play them the first half. Game three first three quarters. Game four maybe a drive or two to fix any issues if need be. Coach’s however seem to shy away from this anymore out of worry of injury. Aaron Rodgers is a great example. Rarely does he play preseason and it always takes the Packers a few weeks to get that power house offense up and running. While I don’t want to see Eberflus play starters every snap of the preseason, I would love to see him stick to the old formula, and it seems that maybe his plans. One thing is for sure, he can’t do worse with it than Nagy did.
