Heading into Week 3, Deshaun Watson and the Cleveland Browns need a win to solidify their momentum moving forward. But if the latest NFL analysis is to be believed, the team has a wide receiver-centric problem they have to solve first.
Watson’s future with the Browns is uncertain as the team prepares for their Week 3 matchup against the New York Giants. After a narrow victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Browns hold a 1-1 record, having scored only 35 points in their first two games. Watson showed slight improvement in Week 2, completing 22 of 34 passes for 186 yards, although he failed to throw a touchdown, relying instead on a rushing score.
Analysts are starting to question Watson’s position, with reports suggesting he may be among quarterbacks at risk of being cut. His performance since joining the Browns has been underwhelming, with a 9-5 record as a starter, only 15 touchdown passes against 11 interceptions, and a subpar quarterback rating of 78.2. The Browns’ offense appeared to function better when Joe Flacco stepped in during Watson’s shoulder injury last season, raising concerns about Watson’s effectiveness.
For Watson to reclaim his former success, he needs to connect more effectively with star receiver Amari Cooper, who has struggled early this season with just five catches for 27 yards in the first two games. Watson remains optimistic, expressing confidence that they will improve their chemistry as the season progresses. The pressing question now is whether Watson can elevate his game and help the Browns regain their competitive edge.
Deshaun Watson and Cleveland Browns Face a Wide Receiver-Related Problem
Along with Watson’ off-field issues, there’s another concern he and the Browns have to face as the season progresses. This can be seen in an NFL analysis by Brad Gagnon for Bleacher Report, which said that there are 10 dropped passes Watson’s receivers have committed since the new campaign began.Dropped passes by Deshaun Watson’s receivers in Cleveland, which is most in the league by a huge margin (Matthew Stafford is second with six)
I’m not trying to let Watson entirely off the hook for another rough start, but it has to be noted that his receivers have dropped 13 percent of the passes he’s thrown. That’s just silly, and it means even more when you consider that he’s also been pressured on a league-high 40.4 percent of his dropbacks.
He also showed some resilience in Sunday’s road victory over the Jaguars, even if veteran receiver Amari Cooper produced just 11 yards on eight targets.
In fact, Cooper has caught just five of the 17 passes thrown his way for 27 total yards in two games. He already has four drops, which is more than 26 teams.
Amari Cooper’s start to the 2024 season has raised concerns among Browns fans. With only five catches for 27 yards and four drops in two games, the veteran receiver is struggling despite leading the team in targets.
The shift to a quick passing game under Watson hasn’t suited his strengths, resulting in low separation and a poor catch percentage. At age 30, Cooper faces pressure to adapt quickly. If his performance does not improve soon, it may signal a worrying trend for the Browns’ offense moving forward. For More Of My Content
