The Cleveland Browns entered Friday with only four safeties under contract. Rodney McLeod retired, while D’Anthony Bell signed with the Seattle Seahawks, and Juan Thornhill was released. Also, the Browns’ backup safeties are inexperienced, as both players have combined for two games and only three defensive snaps, which is not ideal if a starter were to get injured.

Jenkins, who turns 32 next January, has played for the Los Angeles Chargers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Seattle Seahawks in his eight-year NFL career. He has plenty of starting experience, getting the nod in 89 out of 122 regular-season games. Since the safety market is picked over, he is considered one of the top remaining players.
He had a rough year with Seattle

The Seattle Seahawks signed Rayshawn Jenkins to a two-year, $12 million contract last offseason. Jenkins had a rough inaugural season with Seattle, struggling in coverage, missing time with injury, and losing the starting safety job later in the year. He recorded 53 tackles, two TFLs, two sacks, and one fumble recovery for a touchdown, allowing 269 yards, one touchdown, and a 113.6 passer rating in 13 games and nine starts. He missed four games (Weeks 7-11) with a broken hand, and when he returned, he lost the starting safety job to Coby Bryant.
The Seahawks granted Jenkins permission to seek a trade in late February. However, they released him after failing to find a trade suitor.
