The Cleveland Browns went from being a top potential landing spot of Shedeur Sanders in the 2024 NFL draft to a team that instead went for another QB in the form of ex-Oregon Ducks star signal-caller Dillon Gabriel.
The Browns took Gabriel off the board in the third round with the 94th overall pick. It’s a bit of a surprising selection by Cleveland, which could have taken a top-tier QB prospect with the No. 2 pick overall but decided to trade down to No. 5 with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
And even with the No. 5 overall pick, the Browns used it to shore up their defensive line by taking Michigan Wolverines product and defensive tackle Mason Graham.
After picking linebacker Carson Schwesinger, running back Quinshon Judkins and tight end Harold Fannin Jr., the Browns arrived at the decision to select Gabriel, who played a total of six seasons in college football.
With Gabriel, the Browns added an extra body — and youth — to their QB room. Cleveland still has Deshaun Watson and reunited this offseason with Joe Flacco and acquired Kenny Pickett via a trade with the reigning Super Bowl champions Philadelphia Eagles, in exchange for Dorian Thompson-Robinson and a 2025 fifth-round pick.
Fans not amused by Cleveland Browns’ post after Dillon Gabriel pick

The Browns celebrated the arrival of Gabriel in Cleveland with a post on Instagram, sharing a slide of videos and images of the QB during his time in college and captioning it with: “Coming to the team with a winning resume.”
However, many commenters opted to react negatively to it.
“Will Howard, Shedeur Sanders, Riley Leonard, Kyle McCord, Quinn Ewers and we get a 5’9 lefty ?”
“HE HAS A WINNING RESUME BECAUSE HES BEEN IN COLLEGE SINCE THE FIRST TRUMP TERM”
“We wanted will Howard not this clown”
“Know who else has a winning resume. Will Howard.”
“Browns admins fighting for their lives”
“Yeah it’s about time to give up on this team. Taking my talents to the bengals here pretty soon”
Gabriel, who finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting in 2024, passed for 7,517 yards and 60 touchdowns against 12 interceptions through 26 games in his final two seasons in college, one with the Oklahoma Sooners and another (his last) with the Ducks.
