The Cleveland Browns have been in stadium drama for the past few months. It all started in February when news broke that the Browns’ owner, Jimmy Haslam, was looking to buy land in Brook Park, a nearby suburb of Cleveland.
Cleveland Browns Look To Be Moving To Brook Park
The NEOtrans blog first reported the story in the winter that the Browns were looking to move to Brook Park. On Tuesday morning, it reported that a $3.6 billion stadium development is to be revealed soon.
The blog stated,” In the coming weeks, the owners of the Cleveland Browns will reveal their plans to build a $3.6 billion domed stadium and associated development in the Cleveland suburb of Brook Park. According to public sector sources familiar with the plans, owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam have their capital funding identified for the stadium and a small first phase of development.
Cost of the new domed stadium and the provision of about 20,000 parking spaces, almost entirely in surface lots, is estimated at $2.2 billion. Half of that will be privately funded and create new tax revenues that will fund the other half. Much of the funding for the stadium will come from bonds serviced by new stadium-related revenues and city, county and state taxes generated by stadium activities and employment. Another $1.4 billion in private, stadium-area development is planned.
The Browns finally look to be getting a new stadium. When Haslam bought the team in 2012, the plan was always to get a dome. With the lease on the current stadium coming up in 2028, it’s now the perfect time for the Browns to start building their new home.
Cleveland needed an upgrade to their stadium in a serious way, and with all these teams getting new dome stadiums, Haslam wasn’t going to be left out.
Cleveland can now be in the market to host a Super Bowl or even a College Basketball Men’s Final Four with a dome, so it’s just not going to be the Browns that benefit from the new stadium. The entire Cleveland area will bring in more money with other events coming they would’ve never gotten with the old stadium.
Browns fans should be excited about the possibility of a dome, as it will be one of the coolest venues in sports.
