The Cleveland Browns entered a nightmare on Sunday when one of the worst teams in the NFL, the New York Giants, came in and beat them 21-15.
The Browns’ offense looked awful once again, making it three weeks of horrible play, and many fans have turned on the head coach and offensive play-caller, Kevin Stefanski.
Cleveland Browns Fans Need To Stop Blaming Kevin Stefanski
Stefanski has a handful of issues this season, but he is one of the least to blame for the offensive struggles, and fans need to start looking toward the offensive line, running backs, wide receivers, tight ends, and quarterback.
Cleveland hasn’t been able to run the ball in two years; the offensive line is one of the worst in the NFL; the wide receivers drop passes that are right in their hands and are so slow, and Deshaun Watson is the worst starting quarterback in the league.
This offseason, the Browns hired Ken Dorsey to be the offensive coordinator, help unleash Watson, and run more than 11 personnel and fewer tight ends and heavy sets than Stefanski has done his entire career.
There is no way Stefasnki signed off on this change this offseason, and the person in charge of it is owner Jimmy Haslam, who wants to see his $230 million quarterback play in more of a spread offense and throw the ball around.
The only issue is Watson can’t throw the football around like Patrick Mahomes or Josh Allen, and now he’s playing in a system that doesn’t work.
Watson was a great player with the Houston Texans five years ago, but that player is no longer around, and the only way he can succeed is by being a game manager and occasionally making elite throws.
Stefanski had to change his offensive style because he was forced to do so by people coming from the top. The Browns can’t run that style of offense, and they have no idea what they are doing.
It’s crazy that since Stefanski became the head coach in 2020, quarterbacks under him, Baker Mayfield and Jacoby Brissett, have had the best seasons of their careers. Last year, Joe Flacco came off the couch at 39 years old and looked better than he did in his prime.
Watson is the only quarterback who hasn’t worked under Stefanski, and that’s more of a Deshaun problem than a Stefanski one.
There is a reason why Stefanski has won the NFL Coach of the Year twice in his first four seasons, and blaming him for the offense’s mistakes is incorrect.
The Browns are running out a quarterback that can’t play, an offensive line that can’t block, and an offensive system that doesn’t fit the style of any of their players.
