The Cleveland Browns have struggled with their quarterback position since stater Deshaun Watson has been unable to show he can get the job done.
Cleveland traded away three first-round picks and guaranteed Watson $230 million, but he has only made 13 starts since coming over in 2022.
On Sunday, Watson made his first start since returning from shoulder surgery last season, and it didn’t go well. The 28-year-old quarterback completed 24 out of 45 passes for 169 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in a 33-17 loss against the Dallas Cowboys.
Many Cleveland Browns fans took to social media asking for Watson to be benched or released. They won’t be getting their wish now, but a new quarterback could be coming to save the team next year.
Cleveland Browns Draft A Quarterback In 2025
A new 2025 NFL Mock draft from CBS’s Chris Trapasso has the Cleveland Browns taking a new signal caller with the 16th pick. Trapasso has the Browns taking LSU’s starting quarterback, Garrett Nussmeier, who is in his first season as a starter after sitting behind Jayden Daniels last year.
Trapasso praised the LSU quarterback and stated, “Could the Browns actually draft the eventual Deshaun Watson replacement here? If things continue as brutally as they began to start the 2024 season, absolutely. Nussmeier waited his turn at LSU and has the inherent skills to be selected this highly.”
Nussmeier has started his 2024 season off well, throwing for 610 yards and eight scores in his first two games. We will have to wait and see how the 6-foot-2, 200-pound quarterback does when he gets into SEC play, which will start this week against South Carolina, which has a great defensive line.
The Browns are going to have a lot of decisions to make this offseason with Watson if his play doesn’t get any better, but they still owe him over 70 million dollars in 2025 and 2026 so if the veteran quarterback plays okay this season there is a great chance he will be back as the starting quarterback next season.
