Steelers and Texans Players Unite in Powerful Prayer Led by CJ Stroud Thanking Jesus Christ After Intense Playoff Clash

The Houston Texans delivered a dominant 30-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Wild Card round on January 12, 2026. The events after the final whistle got as much attention as the one-sided score.

Texans quarterback CJ Stroud gathered players from both teams at midfield inside Acrisure Stadium for a collective prayer session. The moment featured roughly 20 players kneeling together despite the bitter playoff result that ended Pittsburgh’s season.

“My faith comes before everything,” Stroud has stated multiple times throughout his career. “Win or lose, I’m going to honor God first.”

CJ Stroud finished with 250 passing yards, one touchdown to Christian Kirk, one interception, and five total fumbles (two lost). This made him the first QB in NFL history to fumble five or more times in a playoff win. His performance raised eyebrows despite the win.

Christian Kirk had a breakout performance in the game, catching eight of nine targets for a game-high 144 yards and the only receiving touchdown by the Texans’ offense.

The Texans defense delivered a dominant performance in their victory. They held the Steelers offense to just 175 total yards and 6 points, while forcing two turnovers that were both returned for touchdowns.

Sheldon Rankins recovered a fumble by quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the fourth quarter, returning it 33 yards for a touchdown to extend the Texans’ lead.

Safety Calen Bullock intercepted Rodgers on his final pass attempt of the game and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown.

The Texans became the second team in NFL playoff history to score multiple defensive touchdowns in a game without allowing an offensive touchdown.

This performance made Houston the first team to hold a Rodgers-led team under 20 points in a playoff game since the 2021 season.

CJ Stroud’s public faith draws mixed reactions from NFL observers

The 23-year-old quarterback has never hidden his Christian beliefs since entering the league as the 2nd overall pick in 2023. His postgame prayer gatherings have become routine occurrences, regardless of the game’s outcome.

Critics argue that these displays can make players uncomfortable if they don’t share the same beliefs, while proponents view them as genuine expressions of unity in a divided sports world.

The Steelers players who joined included several veteran defenders willing to kneel alongside their opponents moments after a crushing elimination loss. Pittsburgh’s season ended with head coach Mike Tomlin dropping to 0-7 in his last 7 playoff games.

Will Anderson Jr. stood beside CJ Stroud during the prayer, having just finished with 2.5 sacks in the defensive masterpiece. The Texans recorded their first road playoff victory in franchise history with the win.

Houston now advances to face the Kansas City Chiefs in the Divisional Round next weekend. The prayer circle will likely form again regardless of that outcome.

The presence of public faith displayed on NFL fields remains controversial among fans and media. What is clear is that CJ Stroud will continue to advocate for them as long as he remains in the league.
