Houston Texans quarterback CJ Stroud found himself at the center of a social media firestorm this weekend, except he never said a word. A fabricated Facebook post claimed Stroud called for an NFL-wide moment of silence to honor slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

It has since turned viral online, generating heated political debates and personal attacks against the second-year QB who had nothing to do with the fake statement. Surprisingly, the false note has earned the belief of many people, which dragged the young quarterback into America’s culture wars without his consent.
CJ Stroud and NFL Trend Negatively Over False Charlie Kirk Tribute Claim
This is an extremely pathetic situation, as the misinformation is spreading like wildfire after Kirk was shot and killed at the Utah campus on Wednesday. For that evil actor, innocent players found themselves under scrutiny, and Stroud became the latest victim.
Previously, Justin Jefferson and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes were dragged into a critical spot when a fake story popped up online, saying they have pledged to pay expenses for Kirk’s family. However, no player actually made any statement about helping Kirk’s wife and kids, which left fans with blank expectations.
This Stroud one is a bit controversial because it throws the NFL into a political storm after the Kirk tribute. The fake statement read, “It’s heartbreaking to see America lose such an important voice. My deepest condolences to the family and loved ones. This is not only their loss but also a reminder of the need for us to come together, respect each other, and stand up for the values we share in this country.”
UNPRECEDENTED IN TEXANS HISTORY: CJ Stroud wants the team and the entire NFL to observe a moment of silence in memory of Charlie Kirk. “It’s heartbreaking to see America lose such an important voice,” Stroud said. “My deepest condolences to the family and loved ones. Fans who believed the fake tribute were divided, with many drawing comparisons to how the NFL handled George Floyd’s death in 2020. Even Texas Governor Greg Abbott got fooled, reposting the fake Stroud quote before it was debunked
One fan wrote, “The league did a lot and issued statements and videos honoring George Floyd- what will they do for Charlie Kirk?”
Another commented, “Do the right thing, @NFL. You honored a drug dealer in George Floyd. The least you can do is honor a Christian who literally never hurt anyone.”
The political divide became ugly fast. A third claimed, “Typical cultist trump worshipper. Just willing to straight lie. But then is prob front row at church every week (while he’s picturing the chick singing naked & going home & looking up porn of women who look like her).”
A fourth noted, “Not gonna happen. For the NFL leaders George Floyd a criminal drug addict but the right color. Charlie Kirk a kind honest devoted family man but the wrong color and an authentic Christian. Look at the reaction to Sydney Sweeney.”
A fifth claimed, “This weekend the NFL needs to honor Charlie Kirk’s life. If they don’t their obsession with George Floyd’s life will expose their hypocrisy.”
People are talking about George Floyd because the NFL did a lot after his death in 2020. like holding moments of silence, writing messages in the end zones, and making statements about social justice.
But the NFL hasn’t done much after Charlie Kirk’s death without arranging a moment of silence before the Packers-Packers game. This more limited response from the league feels unbalanced to some fans.
Fans Realize They Got Played by Fake Facebook Story
As the fake story gained traction, some people started saying it wasn’t true with proof. They claimed Facebook is the source of this fake story and called out FB CEO Mark Zuckerberg to take initiative to control these fake reports regarding NFL players. For those unversed, previous fake reports also originated from Facebook.
One wrote, “So, according to @CommunityNotes it was an AI Fake FB ‘story’ Was that where the other NFL Stories come from? Why doesn’t Zuckerberg reign these AssHats in? #WakeUpAmerica! @MustangMan_TX I got snake-bit also.”
Following the comment, another wrote, “I suppose so. It’s disgusting how many fake stories and ads there are. Never buy anything from my Facebook ad.”
A third claimed, “Some people hate the fact that some of the best QBs are Christian Athletes and they have been attacking them all the time.”
NFL fans are now tapped into divisive political topics involving sports figures who never asked to be part of the conversation. For that reason, these AI-generated content and false social media posts easily manipulate public view quickly, making the already polarized climate more disturbing.
