In their first week back to start the 2024 NFL regular season, the Cincinnati Bengals were quite simply a trainwreck. The offense was incapable of sustaining a drive down the field and the defense was staggered by an impressive rushing attack behind New England Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson. To put it plainly, Week 1 went about as poorly as it could’ve gone for the city of Cincinnati and many fans were left wondering why.
Video Showing Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow Straining Wrist Alarms Fans

One of the possibilities that the fans looked into was whether or not elite quarterback Joe Burrow had fully recovered from his injured wrist that prematurely finished his 2023 season in Week 10. In a viral video that was taken during the game on Sunday against New England, Burrow was seen flexing his wrist and then struggling to pick up a water bottle on the sidelines. Many fans immediately panicked and assumed that this must be the reason for the relatively mediocre start by their offensive superstar.

Burrow Responds to the Concerns Addressed by a Journalist

During a press conference on Wednesday, one reported specifically asked Burrow as to whether or not the viral clip was any indication of pain remaining in his wrist. In fairly comical fashion, Burrow couldn’t even recall the incident in question where he struggled to lift a water bottle.

“I don’t know: I drank water. I can’t say I’ve seen that or know what anyone is talking about.”
Previous Comments Made by Burrow Justify His Skepticism

While some might find Burrow’s comment dismissive, the LSU product has previously spoken to reporters and said that he likes to flex and adjust his wrist constantly to attempt to keep it loose. While that may be seen as a cause for concern, Burrow says that it’s more of a preemptive measure to attempt to prevent reaggravation of the injury. The previous over-explanation on his behalf might have been why the usually affable Burrow appeared to be a little annoyed by the question.
Necessary Improvement Heading into Week 2

Burrow is no stranger to starting the season slowly after several freak circumstances including a calf injury last year and an emergency appendectomy the year before has caused him to miss training camp but many fans were hoping that a full training camp would trigger a more explosive offense out of the gate. If Cincinnati wants a legitimate shot at knocking off the reigning Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs this weekend, they’ll have to figure out a way to generate some explosive plays on the offensive side of the ball.
