The Cincinnati Bengals aren’t known as a free-spending organization, but might be on the cusp of making a major exception.
Playmaking wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase is eligible for a new contract this offseason, and it sure sounds like the Bengals are ready and willing to break the bank to keep quarterback Joe Burrow’s most explosive weapon in Cincinnati for the long haul.
“We’re going to reward Ja’Marr,” Bengals GM Duke Tobin told reporters on the first day of the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
Chase is one of the most prolific wide receivers in the sport, and has proven vital to the Bengals’ success during his first four seasons since being chosen in the first-round of the 2021 NFL Draft, out of LSU.
What Might Ja’Marr Chase’s Next Cincinnati Bengals Contract Look Like?
Last season, Chase set new career-highs across the board, catching 1,708 yards and 17 touchdowns, as a favorite target of Burrow, who led the league in passing.
“Ja’Marr is going to end up being the number one paid non-quarterback in the league,” Tobin told reporters. “We want to get these things done early enough that we can build out the rest of the football team.”
As this offseason begins, Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson owns the mantle as the NFL’s highest-paid position player, averaging out to $35 million per season, a deal that Chase has reportedly viewed as the benchmark for his forthcoming negotiations.
Through his first four seasons, Chase has caught 395 passes for 5,425 yards and 46 touchdowns, and it sure sounds like the Bengals are intent on making sure he doesn’t wind up playing anywhere else, anytime soon.
