The Cincinnati Bengals have had a disappointing start to the 2024 season after falling to a 1-4 record in last week’s loss against the Baltimore Ravens. While the team could not come out with a win, the offense reestablished hope for the team in the future after putting up 38 points. Star receiver Ja’Marr Chase had a monster game, putting up 193 receiving yards and two touchdowns. However, he was punished by the league for an unsportsmanlike celebration.

Chase was fined $19,697 for unsportsmanlike conduct/violent gesture as a part of his celebration on a touchdown. Many fans have said they do not see why the penalty was called after watching the play’s video when he committed it.

On the play, Chase caught a long touchdown pass from quarterback Joe Burrow and was only seen doing a ‘griddy’ celebration, which is one of the most common celebrations around the league. This left several NFL fans confused and calling for the league to reevaluate the celebration as Chase has done this many times without being punished for it.

The star receiver has had a slow start to the year for his standards, putting up 493 receiving yards on 29 catches for five touchdowns. While he has started to pick up his production, his team continues to struggle to finish games. The Bengals were predicted to win the AFC North division this season by most analysts, but now have one of the worst records in the NFL after five weeks.

Do you think Chase deserved to be fined for his celebrations, and does the league need to reevaluate the punishments they hand out to players?

I’m so annoyed by this punishment! As if our current record isn’t punishment enough for him and the whole dang team! Let him breathe…sheesh! We need to celebrate every touchdown since we haven’t been able to celebrate a W! (Okay, one)
