The Cincinnati Bengals‘ showdown against the Kansas City Chiefs is one of the most anticipated matchups of Week 2 of the NFL season, but the matchup between cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt and rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy may be one of the contest’s most compelling.
In Worthy’s NFL debut against the Baltimore Ravens, Kansas City’s first-round pick turned heads when he sprinted nearly untouched through the heart of the Ravens’ defense for a 21-yard touchdown before finishing the game with two receptions for 47 yards and another touchdown.
However, Cameron-Britt wasn’t impressed.
“Speed,” Cameron-Britt told reporters is what Worthy adds to the Chiefs’ offense. “That’s about it. He can run straight. Run jet sweeps and just run straight.
He can’t do too much else, that’s about it. If you can put hands on him, he’s only 100-something pounds. If you put hands on him, you’ll stop the speed. So, basically, get your hands on him.”
It is noteworthy that Worthy ran the 40-yard dash in a record 4.21 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine this spring, and seemed to prove in the Chiefs’ opener that his speed translates to the football field.
Whether Worthy can remain a dynamic, game-altering weapon when teams play press-coverage against him, as Cameron-Britt suggests, remains to be seen.
However, it sure sounds like the Bengals are going to test the theory, after the veteran cornerback offered up some bulletin board material for Worthy, Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid, and the Kansas City Chiefs going into the game.
