On Tuesday, the San Francisco 49ers revealed a concerning injury to their offense this preseason. The 49ers’ offense is in flux this preseason as they figure out what will happen with their leading receiver from last season.
The San Francisco 49ers signed Matt Breida
On Monday evening, the 49ers signed veteran running back Matt Breida. The 49ers signed Breida as an undrafted rookie in 2017, and he’d play in San Francisco through the 2019 season. He’s had stops with the Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, and Buffalo Bills.
The reason for Breida’s signing was unclear, as the 49ers had quality depth at the running back position. However, it appears Breida’s signing foreshadowed disappointing news the 49ers revealed on Tuesday.
Christian McCaffrey suffered an injury
According to Matt Maiocco with NBC Sports, Christian McCaffrey is expected to miss the remainder of the preseason due to a lower-body injury:
McCaffrey has a calf strain. It is not a long-term situation, coach Kyle Shanahan said. McCaffrey will likely not play in the preseason. He’ll be out of practice a couple of weeks.
Brock Purdy needs help
The good news for the 49ers is the injury is not expected to affect McCaffrey in the regular season. However, the 49ers aren’t giving Brock Purdy much to work with during practice at training camp. Purdy has had a difficult time at practice in training camp without Brandon Aiyuk. Now Purdy is without the 49ers’ best player on offense for the preseason.
