Chiefs Announce Roster Moves After Patrick Mahomes Suffers Season-Ending Injury

The Kansas City Chiefs have begun reshaping their roster in the wake of Patrick Mahomes’ season-ending knee injury. The team placed the star quarterback on injured reserve, confirming he will miss the final three games of the season as he begins a long rehabilitation process.

Mahomes suffered a torn ACL in the Week 15 loss to the Chargers, a setback that ended both his year and the Chiefs’ playoff hopes. With his roster spot open, the team promoted defensive tackle Zacch Pickens from the practice squad to the 53‑man roster to strengthen their depth on the defensive line. The move reflects the team’s shift toward evaluation and stability as they navigate the final stretch.

Kansas City also re-signed wide receiver Jimmy Holiday to the practice squad. It marks his third stint with the team this season, signaling ongoing trust in his development and versatility. Holiday’s return helps balance a practice unit that will play a larger role as the team reshapes rotations without its franchise quarterback.

Additionally, Kansas City designated rookie tight end Jake Briningstool and cornerback Nazeeh Johnson to return from injured reserve. The designation opens a 21‑day window for both players to participate in practice. Their availability gives the coaching staff flexibility to activate additional contributors before the end of the season.

Kansas City made a couple of moves to the roster after Mahomes went out with a serious injury. This can be seen in a post shared by the team’s official X account.

Gardner Minshew, who finished the Chargers game after Mahomes exited, is expected to start moving forward. While Kansas City no longer has postseason stakes attached to its remaining schedule, the roster adjustments reflect a focus on evaluating talent and preparing for 2026. The team’s depth and development opportunities will take priority with their leader sidelined.

The injury to Mahomes shifted the tone of the Chiefs’ season, but the organization is moving quickly to stabilize the roster. With Pickens elevated, Holiday returning and key players nearing activation, Kansas City will look to finish strong while keeping its long‑term outlook in view.
