“WILDLY OVERHYPED”: Skip Bayless Jumps on the Patrick Mahomes Hate Train

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs suffered a jolting setback in Buffalo that has invited unusually harsh criticism of the quarterback’s standing among the league’s elite. The 28‑21 loss at Highmark Stadium featured a career‑worst completion rate for Mahomes and set off a familiar chorus of naysayers led this time by Skip Bayless.

The Buffalo Bills’s front relentlessly pressured Mahomes, finishing with three sacks and numerous QB hits that disrupted timing and pocket mechanics. The Bills outgained the Chiefs and converted third downs at a much higher clip, forcing Kansas City into predictable passing situations that produced only 79 rushing yards and limited play‑calling options.

Statistically the game was one of the worst of Mahomes’ career: 15 of 34 passing for 250 yards, no touchdowns and an interception late in the game. That line, coupled with a sub‑45 percent completion rate , gave critics new ammunition to argue that his improvisational gifts mask situational shortcomings when an opponent consistently gets into the backfield.

Bayless seized on the performance on social media, calling Mahomes “wildly overhyped” and arguing that highlight plays conceal recurring late‑game flaws. The commentary struck a nerve because it trades on long‑running debates about style versus substance, and it amplified reactions that had already begun among fans and analysts after the loss.

Josh Allen and the Bills executed a near‑flawless game, completing 23 of 26 passes, producing two rushing TDs and mixing in efficient runs by James Cook. Buffalo’s pressure scheme and complementary offense exposed Kansas City’s protection issues and left Mahomes with fewer clean opportunities than usual.

Bayless recently criticized Mahomes after his team lost to the Bills. This can be seen in a series of posts the sports analyst shared on his X account.

I am about to unleash a video about the wildly overhyped Patrick Mahomes.

The team enters the bye week at 5‑4 and face a stretch of tough opponents when play resumes. How Kansas City adjusts in protection schemes and play‑calling will determine whether this game is an outlier or an inflection point.

Mahomes’ legacy is resilient, but performances like this invite scrutiny; critics may be loud now, yet durable responses on the field typically mute the loudest detractors. The onus is on Kansas City to respond quickly.
