NFL Expert Highlights Chiefs’ Top Offseason Priority After Heartbreaking Season

The Kansas City Chiefs face a defining offseason after a rare 6-11 finish that ended their playoff streak and exposed defensive shortcomings. NFL evaluators and team strategists agree on a single, urgent priority: upgrade the pass rush.

Kansas City’s front lacked consistent edge pressure in 2025, finishing well below league averages in sacks and pressure rates.  George Karlaftis and Chris Jones delivered when healthy, but the supporting cast failed to turn consistent pressure into turnovers or collapse pockets late in games.

That shortfall forced schematic workarounds that masked problems rather than solved them, increasing reliance on blitzes and exotic coverages to generate disruption. Those answers are neither sustainable nor ideal against NFL playoff offenses that pick apart pressure-heavy schemes with quick throws and efficient pocket movement.

The logical response is twofold: pursue veteran pass rushers in free agency and target a high-upside edge in the draft with the team’s top-10 pick. Adding an explosive edge rusher would change blocking priorities for opponents, create more one-on-one rush opportunities for the interior line and amplify Chris Jones’ interior disruption.

Kansas City needs to improve its pass rush before the 2026 season starts later this year. This is detailed more in an analysis by Nate Taylor for ESPN.

What is their top offseason priority? Improve the pass rush. The Chiefs must find an above-average pass rusher to put alongside Chris Jones and George Karlaftis. In past years, they have prioritized improving the offensive line. This year, that focus should shift to Steve Spagnuolo’s unit either through free agency or with their first-round pick.

Personnel moves must be matched by coaching emphasis on explosive win traits such as bend, burst and hand usage at the point of attack. Developing rotational depth will also be critical; modern defenses win with rotation that keeps fresh pressure on the quarterback throughout the game, not just in splash plays.

Addressing the pass rush not only improves third-down defense and turnover potential but also buys time for the offense while the team navigates quarterback recovery and contract questions. For a franchise accustomed to contending, this offseason offers a clear path back to relevance.

If the Chiefs prioritize edge speed and finish in both free agency and the draft, they will materially improve their championship odds next season. The edge must be fixed first; everything else follows.
