The Kansas City Chiefs aren’t done tooling with their roster in an attempt to win their third consecutive championship. Earlier today the Chiefs signed wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster to bolster their wide receiving group.
Now they’ve turned their attention to the defense.
The Kansas City Chiefs Acquire Defender From The Arizona Cardinals In Surprising Move
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network:
Sources: The Cardinals have traded LB Cam Thomas to the Chiefs for a 7th round pick. Some added edge help.
The deal was facilitated by agent Chris Abott of Equity Sports.
Despite Thomas’ strong preseason in Arizona, the Cardinals were likely to part ways with Thomas. That is evident by trading him to the Chiefs for such a low pick.
After the severe knee injury suffered by BJ Ojulari, Thomas, a third-round pick from Arizona’s 2022 draft, was potentially going to see more playing time this season.
It is clear that Arizona’s coach Jonathan Gannon is confident in the position’s depth. Here is a brief snapchat of who the Chiefs are adding to their defense:
- Selected by Arizona with their first pick of the third round (87th overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft out of San Diego State. Appeared in 32 games (three starts) in his first two seasons, totaling 39 tackles, 3.0 sacks, seven QB hits, six tackles for loss, two passes defensed and a fumble recovery (returned for a TD).
- Scored the first Cardinals TD of the 2023 season by returning a Commanders fumble two yards for a score in the 2nd quarter of the season-opener at Washington. It was the first TD of his NFL career and his first since his senior year as a TE at Carlsbad (CA) High School in 2017.
- Played in all 17 games as a rookie in 2022, finishing with 18 tackles, 3.0 sacks, six QB hits, three tackles for loss and a pass defensed.
- Thomas and his brother, Zachary, both starred at San Diego State and were both selected in the 2022 NFL Draft. Zachary was selected by the Bears in the sixth round (186th overall) and currently plays for the Rams.
