After going first in the 2024 NFL Draft, Caleb Williams is now getting his feet wet via the Chicago Bears training camp. This led veteran safety and two-time Pro Bowler Kevin Byard to drop an assessment about the rookie quarterback.
The Bears’ offense continues to struggle during training camp practices, with rookie quarterback Caleb Williams and the first-team unit failing to find consistency in the passing game. During a padded practice on Wednesday, the offensive lineup faced a defense missing several key starters, yet still had difficulty moving the ball.
The offense were unable to generate any sustained drives, as the defensive line, even without Montez Sweat and Andrew Billings, consistently applied pressure. The issues were compounded by the offensive line, which started the day shorthanded and then lost right tackle Darnell Wright on the first snap of team drills.
In a two-minute drill scenario, the offense struggled to find any rhythm. The rookie quarterback was forced to scramble on the first play, and a blitz on second down led to an intentional grounding penalty, setting up an unmanageable third-and-16 situation. Defensive end DeMarcus Walker then sacked Williams to end the drill, with the defensive lineman’s emotional celebration underscoring the offense’s continued struggles.
With the regular season opener just 32 days away, the Bears have a limited time to find continuity on the offensive line and get Williams comfortable running the offense.
Chicago Bears Safety Kevin Byard Drops Honest Review of Caleb Williams During Training Camp
After some practice sessions, Bears fans have an idea on how Williams is shaping up as the team’s quarterback. In a video shared by Stacey Dales on X, Chicago’s veteran safety shared more about how the rookie performed in training camp.
#Bears All Pro Safety Kevin Byard was incredibly introspective and comprehensive on the team’s defense… and his new QB Caleb Williams:
“I honestly think that once he scrambles his accuracy goes up probably about 10 points…”@CoachPepHam @nflnetwork @KevinByard pic.twitter.com/SDCIOYQSqa

A couple of weeks ago, Byard shared an anecdote about Williams and how he displayed leadership in the locker room by gathering his teammates and asking them to be more mindful of cleaning up after themselves in the locker room. This small but meaningful gesture showcases Williams’ maturity and compassion, as he is looking out for the custodial staff who have to pick up the mess.
Even though the rookie hasn’t gotten used to the Bears system yet, there’s still time for him to do so. If he does, Chicago will be in a better position than they were last season.
