The Chicago Bears offensive line has been disastrous in Caleb Williams’ first season in the NFL. So far, Williams is hurried the T-4th most, hit the T-18th most, pressured the 3rd most with the 6th highest pressure percentage, and sacked the most of any quarterback, according to Pro Football Reference. Their offensive line is so bad they benched a $30 million starter after a few starts.
The Chicago Bears benched their 2023 free-agent acquisition after two starts

Nate Davis struggled in his first two starts of the 2024 season and suffered a groin injury during practice in Week 3. Because of Davis’ struggles and the groin injury, the Bears turned to Matt Pryor for the starting right guard job. He remained on the injury report until Week 4 but was active for their first five games and saw some playing time in Weeks 3-5 as a fill-in.
Davis was a healthy scratch for Weeks 6 and 8 because the Bears wanted to trade him before the NFL Trade Deadline ended on November 5. Since the trade deadline passed, and he wasn’t dealt, he was a healthy scratch for Week 9. Finally, he missed Week 10 because of a back injury.

He enters the waiver wire

According to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, the Chicago Bears have released Nate Davis. Since Davis’ release occurred after June 1, his $12.75 million dead cap hit will be spread into the 2025 offseason. The Bears will incur a dead cap hit of $10.75 million and free up approximately $600,000 in cap space for 2024. Finally, they will incur a dead cap hit of $2 million and free up $9.5 million in cap space for 2025, per Over The Cap.

Since the Bears released Davis, a vested vet, after the NFL Trade Deadline, he is subject to waivers for the next 24 hours before he becomes a free agent. Also, if an NFL team were to claim him, they would be on the hook for the remaining $3.9 million of his fully guaranteed salary for this season and the remainder of his contract. It’s highly unlikely that a team will claim him off waivers.
