Chicago Bears Named Top Destination For Free Agent With 56 Career Starts

The Chicago Bears are headed into a pivotal year.  The franchise committed to Justin Fields this off-season when they traded away the number one overall draft pick to the Carolina Panthers.  That trade enabled Chicago to add weapons around Fields.  Something they didn’t have much of last year.

Having a well-rounded team will help the young quarterback succeed as early as possible.  That means having a defense that won’t give up more than 27 points per game.  Chicago ranked dead last in points allowed per game last season (27.2).  That has to change, and one free agent could help.

Chicago Bears Named Best Candidate To Bring Back CB Bryce Callahan

Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report described exactly how this could help Chicago:

For the most part, the Chicago Bears are rebuilding. They need to see a big season from third-year quarterback Justin Fields, but they have a lot of young players who are playing major roles, particularly in the secondary.

Eddie Jackson is the elder statesman of the group at 28 years old. Jaylon Johnson is considered a veteran in the unit despite being only 24. Jaquan Brisker, Kyler Gordon and Tyrique Stevenson will all need to play major roles in their first or second years in the league.

It wouldn’t hurt to add someone who can both man the slot and provide veteran leadership. Bryce Callahan is familiar with Halas Hall and would fill that role.

After playing for the Bears from 2015-2018, he has had stops with the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers. He’s going to be 32 in October, but he’s coming off a season in which he recorded three interceptions while playing the slot for the Chargers.

Callahan still has enough left to give to a team that needs support in the slot. A homecoming might be in order.

There is no doubt that Callahan is a very good slot cornerback, as he has started 56 of the 81 games in which he has been active. Last season, he started 11 games for the Chargers, which was a career-high. In his career, he has intercepted nine passes.

During his season in 2020 with the Bears, he had two picks, but most importantly, he held opposing quarterbacks to a passer rating of 47.8 when they targeted him (according to Pro Football Reference). That season was the best of his career to date.

Bringing back a familiar veteran for Chicago’s defense almost makes too much sense.
