The Chicago Bears have big expectations for quarterback Justin Fields this season. After making a leap last season, the team needs him to do it again, especially in the passing game. When the Bears secured the number one overall pick, many wondered if they would look to move on from Fields. They seemed to squash those rumors by trading with the Carolina Panthers but many coaches and front-office people still danced around the question. Bears OC Luke Getsy was very clear in his recent message about Justin Fields.

Love this anecdote from @LRiddickESPN on @WaddleandSilvy about a recent conversation with Luke Getsy about Justin Fields.

"We got our guy. We just need to help him out. Protect him and get him weapons. And we're doing a pretty good job of it. We have a good start." pic.twitter.com/viCxjNG1Q7

Chicago Bears OC Luke Getsy Backs Justin Fields

ESPN’s Louis Riddick talked to Getsy at Bryce Young’s pro day and reveal some nuggets from the conversation on a recent podcast.

“I talked to Luke Getsy down in Alabama for the Bryce Young pro day and I was like ‘hey, you down here looking at these quarterbacks?” Riddick said. “You trying to find one?’ And he was like ‘nope. We got our guy, we just need to help him out. Protect him and get him weapons. And we’re doing a pretty good job of it. We have a good start.’ I could not agree more so it’s not even a discussion in my book.”

“We got our guy”. While Ryan Poles and Matt Eberflus haven’t openly questioned Fields, they also haven’t explicitly backed him. Getsy made it very clear what he thinks of Fields. The goal now is to surround him with talent in order to give him a fair shot at evaluating whether he can be the quarterback of the next decade.

    Building The Supporting Cast

The wide receiver problem was real last season and the team has done well to address it. DJ Moore raises the floor of the group. Chase Claypool and Darnell Mooney should operate better in lesser roles. Issues still remain on the offensive line but the hope is the Bears can score a good lineman or two in the draft. It all hinges on Fields showing he can be effective in the passing game. Last season he had multiple games with under 100 passing yards. In today’s NFL, that is not a recipe for winning games regardless of what your supporting cast is.

The Chicago Bears are feeling hopeful going into next season. They are acquiring draft capital for the future while also building for the present. It all hinges on Fields. If he can be the franchise quarterback, the Bears will be contenders in the NFC. If not, the Bears could find themselves looking for another answer at quarterback.
