Chicago Bears GM Makes Non-Committing Statement Regarding Justin Fields as Starting Quarterback

The Chicago Bears are in a very interesting position this offseason. While they have a young quarterback in Justin Fields, they also have the number one overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. While the Bears did spend a first round pick on Fields in 2021, he was mediocre last season and Chicago, obviously, was the worst team in the NFL. There are some who believe that the Bears should trade down in the draft and roll with Fields. He is, after all, a dynamic quarterback that has the ability to break defenses with his legs. That being said, Bears general manager Ryan Poles would not commit to Fields as the Bears starting quarterback in 2023.

When asked if Justin Fields would be the Bears starting quarterback in 2023, Ryan Poles refused to fully stand behind his quarterback. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network shared Poles’ answer to the question on Twitter:

Asked about Justin Fields being their starter, #Bears GM Ryan Poles says, “That’s the plan right now.” They’ll continue to evaluate all the draftable QBs before making a firm decision.

Of course, this does not mean that Fields is out as the quarterback of the Bears. Instead, Chicago will do a full evaluation of what talent is available before making a decision.

Should the Chicago Bears Move on From Justin Fields Already?

The fact of the matter is that while Fields did not put up great numbers in 2022, he also did not have the weapons allotted to many of the NFL’s greats. Not only did he go through the 2022 season with below-average wide receivers and tight ends, the Bears’ offensive line was among the worst in the NFL (again).

If Chicago moves on from Fields, that new quarterback will face the same uphill climb that Fields has faced ever since he took over as the Bears’ starting quarterback. It would be much wiser for Chicago to either use that first pick on an elite offensive lineman or trade down for multiple picks with which to attain multiple quality pieces. Let us not forget: the Bears have the most salary cap space of any NFL team going into 2023. They have the means to build around Fields.

The question is do they still have faith that he can be a franchise quarterback?
