The Chicago Bears and head coach Matt Eberflus fired offensive coordinator Shane Waldron on Tuesday, amid a three-game losing streak as the offense and quarterback Caleb Williams seemed to stall out.
Sunday afternoon’s dreadful 19-3 loss to the New England Patriots was seemingly rock bottom for Waldron and the Bears offense.
Hours after initial reporting of Waldron’s dismissal emerged, shocking details followed, including a report that several Bears players approached Eberflus voicing their concerns about the underachieving offensive coordinator.
Marc Silverman of Waddle & Silvy on ESPN 1000 posted this piece of insight on Twitter: “After talking to a few people with knowledge of the situation, players went to [coach] Matt Eberflus & [G.M.] Ryan Poles asking them to make a change at offensive coordinator.”
Chicago Bears Make Call on Caleb Williams’ Future
In addition to Silverman’s revelations, there have even been suggestions that some Bears players hoped that Chicago would bench No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams.
That isn’t going to happen.
“Caleb is our starter,” Eberflus said on Monday, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Williams has struggled mightily in recent weeks, completing just 50.3 percent of his passes for 468 yards with 18 sacks over the past three games. So, clearly something needed to change, but it remains to be seen if a change from Waldron to interim offensive coordinator Thomas Brown will be enough of a spark to turn around Chicago’s season and Williams’ trajectory from the past several games.
