Riviera elaborated on the hesitation to pick up Young’s option. Riviera said, “Well, what goes into that is you get an opportunity to sit down, look at his tape with our scouts, talk about the way he played, what do we see in terms of development and growth?”
Why Is there Hesitation?
Picking up Chase Young’s option should be a no-brainer for the Commander’s organization. However, Chase Young is still recovering from tearing his ACL early in the 2021 season. Young was poised to break out and build on his strong rookie campaign. Young’s health is a key factor in the Commander’s decision. Riviera said he is going to talk to the team doctors and training staff to check on Young’s progress.
Tough Reality of the NFL
NFL players dream of signing a second contract after entering the league. Some first-round draft picks get their fifth-year options picked up and some don’t. Chase Young’s situation is different because of his injury and shows the business aspect of the NFL. Teams have to think about their cap space and are always looking to save money. Teams also have to think about the future of their franchise. Washington is taking all the steps needed to do what’s best for the football team.
What happens if the option isn’t picked up?
If the option isn’t picked up, Young will play out his rookie deal during the 2023 season. Young can negotiate for a second contract after his rookie contract is finished. Chase Young can come back stronger during the 2023 season and prove why he should be paid. Whatever happens with the option, Young will be hungry to prove he is one of the best edge rushers in the NFL.
