NFL Expert Names Justin Herbert as a Dark Horse MVP Candidate

Justin Herbert has emerged as a compelling dark horse candidate for the 2025 NFL MVP award. Despite not being among the early favorites, his skill set and potential to lead the Los Angeles Chargers to success make him a strong contender.

Herbert is known for his exceptional arm strength, accuracy, and ability to make plays under pressure. Coming off a solid 2024 season, where he received a handful of MVP votes, he is positioned to build upon his previous success. Los Angeles, under head coach Jim Harbaugh, have bolstered their roster, including the addition of rookie wide receiver Tre Harris, which could significantly enhance Herbert’s passing game.

Los Angeles faces a tough challenge in the competitive AFC West, where they must contend with Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. However, Herbert’s ability to execute in high-pressure games could set him apart. If the team can improve their playoff chances and Herbert delivers consistent performances, he could earn serious MVP consideration.

Herbert will also need to navigate Harbaugh’s emphasis on a balanced offense, which leans heavily on the running game. Even with this potential limitation, Herbert’s natural talent and leadership could shine through, particularly in critical moments. His ability to adapt to the team’s evolving dynamics will be key to his MVP campaign.

If things go his way next season, Herbert may find himself as a dark horse contender for the MVP. This is explained more in an analysis by Judy Battista for the league’s official website.

Another quarterback who got a handful of votes last year, Herbert might have to overcome Jim Harbaugh’s desire to lean on the running game more. But the addition of rookie receiver Tre Harris could help shore up one of the biggest question marks on the team. Herbert is as dazzling a quarterback as there is in the NFL, and Harbaugh loves him. If the Chargers challenge the Chiefs in the AFC West, Herbert should get more than just a scant few votes.

Experts have noted that Herbert’s chances largely depend on the Chargers’ success as a team. If they emerge as serious contenders in the AFC and Herbert maintains elite production, his MVP candidacy could gain significant traction. The storyline of dethroning Mahomes in the division would only amplify his case.

Herbert’s inclusion as a dark horse MVP candidate highlights his potential to elevate the Chargers in 2025. With the right combination of individual brilliance and team success, he has a genuine shot at securing the league’s top individual honor.
