Austin Ekeler is waiting on a trade
Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler asked permission to seek a trade this offseason. The Chargers agreed as they would like to get some value out of Ekeler before next offseason, as their tight cap situation with quarterback Justin Herbert’s impending extension should preclude them from re-signing the 27-year-old star. But so far, no team has taken the plunge on Ekeler. He has a theory about why teams might be cautious this time of year.

Ekeler was a guest on Sirius XM’s Fantasy Sports Radio recently. He said he still wishes to be with the Chargers long-term, but the franchise isn’t interested in negotiating right now. Ekeler said he wants to play for a team that wants him long-term. According to Nick Shook with NFL.com, Ekeler said teams are hesitant to trade because of the draft picks they’ll have to give up before they’ve even signed him to a long-term deal.
“Time will play out. Who knows? We’ll see what happens with the draft. But it’s a situation where, look, if a team wants me in the long term, it’s a year where they’ll have to give up picks and then I’ll have to renegotiate, so that’s kind of playing into it for sure. But we’ll see, like I said. Time will tell, and we’ll see what happens after the draft.
Ekeler will get a long-term deal by next offseason. But he could be in Los Angeles this fall.
