CCU looks to keep momentum rolling into their second Sun Belt Conference contest of 2022. The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (4-0, 1-0 SBC) host the Georgia Southern Eagles (3-1, 0-0) as part of celebrating Family Weekend at Brooks Stadium on Saturday. The offense is riding high after another 500+ yard performance in a 41-24 road victory over SBC foe Georgia State. The defense, nicknamed the “Black Swarm,” has forced 14 turnovers in four games – 12 on defense and two on special teams. The 14 turnovers rank first overall in the FBS tied with Southern California.
Scouting the Eagles
The Chants defense will have its hands full in this one. The Eagles have put up monster numbers through four games on the offensive side of the ball. Georgia Southern comes in averaging 39.8 points per game while tallying 509.5 yards of offense per contest. Quarterback transfer Kyle Vantrease leads the Eagles offense. He’s thrown for nearly 1,300 yards and eight touchdowns on the young season.
The ground attack is led by a trio of Jalen White, Gerald Green and OJ Arnold. All three running backs have seen significant playing time. Perhaps the team’s biggest strength is the offensive line. They rank in the top 10 nationally in fewest sacks allowed (1.0) and fewest tackles-for-loss (12.0).
Grayson McCall and the offense should be able to keep the momentum rolling against this Eagles defense. They’ve allowed 26.8 points per game and over 430 yards of total offense to the opposition. Getting after the quarterback and forcing turnovers have been a struggle for GS. Through four games they’ve tallied three sacks and recorded five turnovers. The Chants should be able to exploit this defense in front of the home crowd.
Series Overview
The Chanticleers have won the past two games against Georgia Southern. However, the Eagles lead the overall series 5-3.

Saturday’s contest could be a wet one as Hurricane Ian is projected to bring rain and heavy winds. However, these universities are used to it as two of the past three meetings included rain.
McCall and Coastal will put a pair of winning streaks on the line this weekend. CCU has won seven straight games dating back to last year. They’ve also won three straight Sun Belt Conference games. Kickoff is set at Brooks Stadium this Saturday, Oct. 1, at 4 p.m. EST.
