The Cardinal of Stanford (3-6, 2-5) travels to Corvallis to take on Oregon State (7-2, 4-2) this week in a game I believe could be quite a bit closer than the spread would indicate. Not to spoil the ending…please keep reading…but a 21 point spread is a bit lofty for this matchup.
Stanford is coming off a big 10-7 win over Washington State, where offense was completely optional. Oregon State has won 4 of 5 and is still in the hunt for a berth in the Pac-12 Championship Game.

Stanford’s results have been very inconsistent this season. You never know what to expect from week-to-week with them. They have gone from scoring 33 points in a loss to Washington to scoring 10 in a victory over Washington State the very next week. Quarterback Ashton Daniels and Wide Receiver Elic Ayomanor have connected for some massive performances. Freshman WR Tiger Bachmeier is another weapon Daniels can utilize in the pass game. Tight End Benjamin Yurosek missed last week’s contest with an injury, with no news on his availability.
Defensively, the Cardinal have not been very good…their victory over Washington State withstanding. They have allowed over 40 points in a game 5 times this season and they don’t force a lot of turnovers (-2 in turnover ratio this season).

DJ Uiagalelei has experienced a bit of a career resurgence at Oregon State after basically being forced out of Clemson. He still has accuracy issues, but Offensive Coordinator Brian Lindgren has played up to his strengths. RBs Damien Martinez (878 yards, 6.3 ypc) and Deshaun Fenwick (436 yards, 5.4 ypc) have formed a great 1-2 punch in the backfield.
The Beavers have a solid defense, especially in their front seven. LB Andrew Chatfield Jr. leads the team with 7 sacks, which ranks 4th in the conference. They have been succeptable to to giving up big games from time-to-time, allowing Arizona to win through the air.
Game Prediction
Oregon State does a lot of things that give Stanford problems. On the flip side, Stanford has enough playmaking ability at Quarterback and Wide Receiver that could and should make this game closer than the 21 point spread. In the end, Oregon State will pull away late to put this game away. The Beavers have two huge matchups remaining with Washington and Oregon looming after this game.
Oregon State 35 – Stanford 17
