Here we are, mid-July, and all of us are eager for football news. Cleveland signing Deshaun Watson has dominated the off-season news. As a result, Cleveland finally sent Baker Mayfield off to Carolina for a conditional pick in a deal that made few headlines. The Panthers released former Elon QB Davis Cheek to make roster room for Mayfield.
Here’s a look at the current Carolina Panther QB depth chart:

Baker Mayfield will likely serve as QB1 for the Carolina Panthers for the 2022 season. He was traded to the Carolina Panthers from the Cleveland Browns for a 2024 fifth-round pick that could become a fourth-rounder. Mayfield spent the first four years of his career with the Browns after the team selected him with the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. During that time, Mayfield has posted a 61.6 completion percentage with 92 touchdowns over 56 interceptions. Notably, the Carolina Panthers will host the Cleveland Browns the first week of the 2022 season.

Sam Darnold finds himself competing for the starting QB job for the 2022 campaign. It isn’t a stretch to say Darnold struggled in his first year in Carolina. His stat line of a 59.8 completion percentage and 9 touchdowns over 13 interceptions bears that out. A shoulder injury and the absence of star RB Christian McCaffrey certainly did not help.

The likely QB3 for the Panthers heading into the 2022 season, Matt Corral was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2022 NFL draft. The former Ole Miss QB, though talented, has a lot to learn at the NFL level. Of the three quarterbacks listed here, Corral is the only QB who has a contract extending beyond the 2022 season.
Heading into the 2022 season, the Carolina Panthers are hopeful to get more consistent play from the quarterback position. Given how Cleveland handled their own QB situation, Baker Mayfield should have plenty of motivation to play well for his new team. A newly remade offensive line and a healthy Christian McCaffrey could aid in this goal.
