The Cleveland Browns quarterback competition is one of the most talked about battles during the NFL offseason. With OTAs and mandatory minicamp in the rear-view mirror, training camp will begin next month.

Joe Flacco could very well be the Week 1 starting quarterback for the Browns when they face the Cincinnati Bengals. Dillon Gabriel, Shedeur Sanders, and Kenny Pickett will look to beat out Flacco for the starting spot. It will be interesting to see how head coach Kevin Stefanski splits the reps with the first team during training camp.

Zac Jackson of The Athletic covers the Browns and he has no doubt paid close attention to the starting quarterback battle during the offseason. Each NFL analyst for The Athletic had to talk about one thing that they have observed during the offseason so far. Jackson said,

“Even if Joe Flacco doesn’t win the starting job, or doesn’t keep it past Halloween, the Browns made a smart move in April when they brought him back on a one-year deal. Flacco is the best pure thrower of the four-man quarterback group, even at 40, but it’s his steadiness and experience that make him such a valuable addition right now. Flacco both mastered the offense quickly and earned the respect of the locker room during his 2023 stint with Cleveland. It was clear this spring that players, young and old, can lean on Flacco as the Browns go about the business of trying to fix their broken offense.”

With the locker room having the most trust in Flacco, it appears as if the Browns players would be more comfortable with him starting in Week 1 for Cleveland against Cincinnati rather than Pickett. There are Browns fans who would rather see the rookie Sanders potentially start, but his traffic violations could be a cause for concern for this franchise moving forward.

If Flacco does win the starting job, it would not be a surprise for Cleveland. The only question after that for them would be who would be the second and third quarterbacks on the Browns depth chart? This story of the Browns quarterbacks continues to be developing and also a mystery.
