Brian Flores might not have been the best it as the Miami Dolphins head coach, but it’s no question he is one best defensive minds. As Miamis head coach, Flores help build a defense that played a big part in the Dolphins finishing the 2021 season winning eight of their last nine games. Due to his hands on approach, it’s defensive coordinator Josh Boyer who gets overlooked.
Boyer left the New England Patriots in 2019 and joined the Miami Dolphins as the pass defense coordinator coach and the cornerback coach. He was promoted to the defensive coordinator position in 2020. His first season Miamis defense finished sixth in the NFL and first in turnovers. But in 2021 the defense struggled early and reports were he was stripped of his play calling duties. New head coach Mike Mcdaniel surprised many by announcing that Josh Boyer would return as defensive coordinator. Adding, how last season they were a defense he didn’t want to go up against and when he looked at tape of the team’s play and said the unit is one he is “glad is our defense.”
“There is recall, and that gives you the ability to do similar things……but the biggest advantage is the communication between the players,” Boyer said this offseason. ” Not only do they know the guy that is next to them, they know how they play.”
This offseason Miami added 11 year veteran pass rusher Melvin Ingram, and drafted speedy linebackers Channing Tindall and Cameron Goode to a defense that already includes Pro Bowlers Xavien Howard and Byron Jones. Coach Boyer also looks to have breakout performances by second year players Jaelan Phillips and Jevon Hollands.
As training camp kicks off, the pressure would be on coach Josh Boyer to continue the aggressive style of defense that can take them to the elite level.
