Cam Newton, former Carolina Panthers quarterback, recently had WNBA’s Brittney Griner on his ‘Funky Friday’ podcast, where he discussed her imprisonment and Russia and eventual release. Griner was arrested somewhere near Moscow when her vape cartridges containing a tiny amount of hash oil were found. For the small amount of cannabis, Griner was sentenced to nine years in prison.

This was at a time when the United States of America government was continually calling out Vladimir Putin and Russia for invading Ukraine. As a result, there were ongoing tensions between the two countries. Many people felt that Griner had been arrested and sentenced simply because of the political unrest. Griner also narrated her experiences in Russian detention, remarking that she was being targeted specifically although she was not dangerous to anyone.
“You had a lot of things working against you specifically. Those lists are you’re black, you’re a woman, you’re a queer, you look different and you’re American.” Cam Newton theorized on the ‘Funky Friday’ podcast as to why Brittney Griner was being targeted by the prison authorities in Russia.
“Definitely felt that, especially once they found what they found, and they had me basically just sitting off to the side. When I say they were coming out, looking, looking at me, going back in, coming back out, smiling, getting other people, it was a show.” Griner responded to Cam Newton.
Cam Newton’s guest also discussed what went down during the prisoner exchange which eventually brought her back to the United States. Griner, who was sentenced for less than a gram of hash oil was exchanged for politician Viktor Bout, who had already served a decade of his 25-year sentence for arms dealing.

Cam Newton Faces Plenty Of Heat For Excluding Jalen Hurts From Top QB List
Meanwhile, Cam Newton recently shared his top ten quarterbacks in the NFL, which has angered and shocked many fans. Newton’s list had one big name absent, i.e. Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback. Hurts recently took the Eagles to the Super Bowl and won the Lombardi Trophy after defeating the mighty Kansas City Chiefs who were originally aiming for a three-peat.

While Cam Newton may have omitted Jalen Hurts from his list, the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback has definitely won the hearts of thousands who took to the comments to justify their cause that the talented player definitely deserved a spot on the list.
