Caleb Williams showed flashes of star potential during his rookie stint with the Chicago Bears. Still, former NFL player Emmanuel Acho remains unconvinced that Williams is ready to lead the franchise turnaround.
The Bears have struggled in recent seasons, finishing last in the NFC North each year since 2022, including a 5-12 record last season. With the arrival of new head coach Ben Johnson, who helped revive the Detroit Lions as their offensive coordinator, Chicago’s hopes for better results increased, providing a veteran mentor for the young Williams.
However, Acho doesn’t believe Caleb Williams will develop under Johnson’s leadership. On Sunday, the FOX Sports analyst raised the former USC Trojans’ emotional immaturity and inconsistent moments, which he believes is uncharacteristic for a franchise quarterback.
“I see you on the bench moaning. Why?” Acho said. “And I don’t know any other quarterback, outside Kyler Murray, who would display that type of body language. Shoutout to Caleb for identifying he needs to fix these issues—he said that within the last 48 hours. But trust is earned. I can’t just give it to him.”

Caleb Williams passed 3,541 yards and six interceptions in his first season with the Bears. He has an 87.8 passer rating. However, he also leads the league in sacks, 68, and sack yardage lost with 466. Moreover, Chicago started strong with a 4-2 record but collapsed down the stretch, losing 10 of its final 11 games, raising concerns about their consistency.

Ben Johnson focuses on Caleb Williams’ body language ahead of the 2025 season
Ben Johnson isn’t just working on Caleb Williams’ on-the-field plays and how the Bears quarterback carries himself during adversity.

According to SI’s Albert Breer, Johnson focuses on improving Williams’ body language this offseason. In a press conference last May, the former Detroit coach revealed his goal to uphold resilience on the Bears roster.
“Early in the process we sat down and watched some tape from a year ago and we talked it through,” Johnson said.
“It’s like, ‘Do we really want to? Is this what we want to look like or not?’ We come to an agreement, ‘No, it’s not, OK, we learn from it, we move on to the next thing.’ Body language is a huge thing. Demeanor. We don’t want to be a palms-up team where we’re questioning everything. No, no, no — to me that’s a little bit of a sign of weakness. We don’t want to exhibit that from anybody on the team.”

With improved execution and attitude, especially from Caleb Williams, the Bears hope there’ll be less to worry about and react to in 2025.
