Buffalo Bills’ Defense Gets Rave ESPN Review

Even at this point of the NFL 2024 season, there are certain aspects of the league that deserve recognition. According to the latest ESPN analysis, though, one of those noteworthy details is how good the Buffalo Bills’ defense has been.

In a pivotal AFC East matchup during Week 2, the Bills delivered a decisive 31-10 victory over the Miami Dolphins, showcasing a defensive strategy that effectively neutralized the latter’s explosive offense. Despite missing key players like linebacker Matt Milano and cornerback Taron Johnson, the Bills’ defense executed a game plan that emphasized keeping plays in front of them, minimizing risk for their less experienced defenders.

The Bills notably avoided blitzing Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, a rare approach that has only been seen a few times since 2017. This tactic allowed them to maintain coverage while relying on their defensive line’s dominance. Defensive tackle Ed Oliver was instrumental, creating pressure that forced Tagovailoa into hurried throws, leading to critical turnovers.

Buffalo’s defensive line, including standout performances from DaQuan Jones and Greg Rousseau, consistently disrupted Miami’s offensive flow. Although the Dolphins managed to gain yardage on several plays, the Bills’ ability to generate pressure at key moments limited scoring opportunities. Miami’s running back, De’Von Achane, was particularly effective, but the Bills’ disciplined scheme helped to contain the damage.

ESPN’s Latest NFL Analysis Raves About Buffalo Bills Defense

Even though it has only been two games into the new season, the Bills’ defense has been worthy of recognition. This is backed up in an analysis done by Alaina Getzenberg for ESPN.

The early surprise: The Bills’ defense has thrived despite having to play several backups.

The verdict: Real. It’s not the first time a Sean McDermott defense has found success with backups on the field, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that the unit has risen to the occasion with linebackers Matt Milano and Terrel Bernard and nickel cornerback Taron Johnson all injured. While the defense started slowly in Week 1, the past three halves have been great. Against the Dolphins in Week 2, the defense gave up 10 points and held quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to an air yard per completion average of 1.8. The success the Bills’ defense has had in the past suggests the unit can keep this up.

Looking ahead, while the Bills achieved success with this defensive strategy, questions remain about its sustainability against stronger offenses. The challenges of facing more formidable interior lines could test the depth and resilience of Buffalo’s defense in upcoming games, especially with the health of their key players in question.

The game against the Dolphins highlighted not only the Bills’ current strengths but also areas needing improvement as they aim to maintain their position atop the division. If they keep this up, NFL fans can expect the team to go far in the playoffs next year.
