Kansas City seems primed for a third straight trip to the Super Bowl, securing the No. 1 seed. But the Buffalo Bills are still the most dangerous team in the NFL playoffs.
The reason? Josh Allen is the NFL’s only triple-threat quarterback. More on that later.
Expecting Allen to lead the Bills to the Super Bowl is not a matter of him being the frontrunner to win the Most Valuable Player award. It’s not his massive numbers — although 3,549 yards passing, 514 rushing, and 38 total touchdowns are impressive.
But there’s more to the story.
Josh Allen responds in the clutch
Unlike his MVP rival, Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson, Allen rises to postseason challenges. Last year Allen wore out the Steelers in a 31-17 victory.
And then, in the loss to the Chiefs, he passed for 186 yards, rushed for 72, and accounted for all three of his team’s touchdowns. The loss cut deep, according to NFL analyst Tony Romo. After calling it the most devastating loss of Allen’s career, Romo said it would eventually change, according to a post on YouTube.
“It’s just so hard to take if you’re Josh Allen,” Romo said. “Because it’s like, what else can I do? And the truth is just keep going. Doing it. You’ll break through eventually. (The) problem is 15 (Patrick Mahomes) is really good. He ain’t just gonna let you do it. You gotta go win it and take it from him. To be the man, you gotta beat the man.”
In Allen’s playoff career, he is 5-5. He has thrown for 2,723 yards in those 10 games with 21 touchdowns and four interceptions. As a runner, he has 563 yards with five more scores. Those are terrific postseason numbers.
It’s time for Allen to move forward
Romo spoke logically. Allen is too good to fail to break through eventually. And 2024 looks like the prime year.
NFL analyst Pete Prisco thinks it will happen, according to profootballnetwork.com.
“It’s time for Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills to quit being Charles Barkley and Sean Kemp and Karl Malone and John Stockton to Michael Jordan,” Prisco said. “It’s time to beat Michael Jordan, and Michael Jordan is Patrick Mahomes. It’s time for Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills to go beat Michael Jordan.”
There’s power behind Prisco’s words. They come in the form of Allen’s ability to beat the Chiefs. The Bills’ star is 4-1 against Mahomes in regular-season games. However, in the postseason, Allen is 0-4 in the against Mahomes and Bengals star quarterback Joe Burrow.
Josh Allen is a different dude
It’s not like Allen is simply a good passer who might find the blind-squirrel acorn. It’s not like he’s a dual-threat who hopes his legs can get him somewhere his arm can’t.
No, as stated before, Allen is the NFL’s only triple-threat quarterback. He’s a great passer. He’s a great runner. And he has the ability to pick up and entire offense and lead them down the field.
The latter is what sets him apart from Jackson, who can throw in the neighborhood of Allen and is probably a more dangerous runner. But Jackson doesn’t have the ability to carry a team in the way Allen does it. Jackson needs a ground game. He always has. And now that he has Derrick Henry, it’s very tough to stop the Ravens.
But on his best days, Allen doesn’t need superstars like Henry around him. He’s going to make everybody better. And that winning edge that will finally display itself in the postseason.
