Buffalo Bills hire a defensive assistant
The Buffalo Bills are hiring more help for their defensive staff in 2023 following an early exit from the playoffs. The team made changes to their defensive staff following their loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in the Divisional Round when they fired safeties coach Jim Salgado.
Some Bills fans were confused by Salgado’s firing, as the safeties unit was one of the better groups on the defense. The Bills hired Joe Danna to take Salgado’s place for 2023. They added to their staff Wednesday.
According to Mike Garafolo with the NFL Network, the Bills are hiring Al Holcomb as their senior defensive assistant. Holcomb is coming from the Carolina Panthers, where he served as their interim defensive coordinator and assistant head coach.
The #Bills are hiring Al Holcomb as a senior defensive assistant, source says. Holcomb, who was the #Panthers’ interim defensive coordinator and assistant head coach under Steve Wilks, reunites with Sean McDermott, whom he worked alongside in Carolina.

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott worked with Holcomb from 2013-2016. McDermott was the Panthers defensive coordinator, and Holcomb was the linebackers’ coach. They were a part of the Panthers team that made it to the Super Bowl in the 2015 season.
They’ll look to achieve greater results with the Bills next season. The Bills are expected to compete for the Super Bowl with quarterback Josh Allen. The Bills are making it clear that the blowout loss to the Bengals will not be good enough going forward.
