The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are going into the 2024 season looking to capitalize on the success they had in 2023. In Baker Mayfield’s first season with Tampa Bay the team went 9-8, won the NFC South, and advanced to the divisional round in the playoffs.
Tampa Bay accomplished their two biggest tasks this off-season by re-signing Baker Mayfield and Mike Evans. However, there is one veteran who won’t be on the initial 53-man roster partly due to his tumultuous relationship with Mayfield.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers Release WR Amid Relationship With Baker Mayfield
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport:
The Bucs have released veteran WR Sterling Shepard, source said. he 31-year-old signed with hopes of rekindling his rapport with old teammate Baker Mayfield.
And that may still happen. The team is holding a practice spot for him.
Here is a press conference of Shepard addressing his relationship with Mayfield:
At first glance, this seemed like a smart move. When it came to the No. 3 receiver position, Shepard was competing with Trey Palmer and Jalen McMillan. The coaching staff was reportedly high on Shepard.
Shepard, however, suffered an injury midway through training camp and never recovered. During Shepard’s absence, Cody Thompson and (young, inexpensive) Kameron Johnson made impact plays in practice and preseason games.
It will be interesting to see if Shepard does stick around and if the Buccaneers find a way to get him involved in the offense.
