The Cleveland Browns put their money where their mouth is with Myles Garrett. After the star edge rusher demanded a trade earlier this off-season, Cleveland revised their contract offer. Eventually, the two sides came to an agreement on a massive 5 year, $125 million contract.
However, troubling reports are already emerging regarding their elite pass rusher.
Browns: Troubling Reports Emerge On Myles Garrett After Massive Extension
A new report suggests the Cleveland Browns made a big mistake in not trading Myles Garrett, the team’s star defensive end:
One month after publicly requesting a trade from the Browns, Myles Garrett wound up signing a four-year contract extension worth $160 million. The deal, which includes $123.5 million in guaranteed money, makes Garrett the highest-paid non-quarterback player in league history.
Extending Garrett was supposedly a giant win for the Browns’ organization and fanbase. The No. 1 pick of 2017 is a surefire Hall of Famer who will likely go down as the franchise’s greatest player in the Super Bowl era.
But a new report from Jason Lloyd of The Athletic suggests that the Browns may have actually made a mistake by choosing to extend Myles Garrett instead of trading him.
According to Lloyd’s report, the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year “is frequently late to” Cleveland’s facility and has broken team rules by skipping their mandatory activities:
“It’s well known within the Browns that Garrett is frequently late to the facility. He has skipped mandatory team activities on multiple occasions. Veterans typically police the locker room on those types of things and create the culture of accountability, but here, it’s the best player breaking the rules. That has to change now.”
Garrett has avoided controversy for most of his career, which makes these details surprising. Only one exception occurred in a 2019 game, when Garrett was suspended after hitting Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph with his helmet.
In light of Garrett’s extension, the Browns need to focus on upgrading their roster around him. If the team has the common sense to give up on Deshaun Watson, it will have to address its long-term quarterback issue.
