The Cleveland Browns are looking to capture lightening in a bottle two years in a row. Cleveland finished the 2023 season 11-6 and wound up in the playoffs. Joe Flacco opened his fountain of youth last season and helped the Browns offense (who was without Nick Chubb) light the league on fire.
Getting a healthy Deshaun Watson back on the field will only increase Cleveland’s expectations, however, today the Browns announced some pretty significant news regarding Watson.
The Cleveland Browns Announce Long-Term News Regarding Deshaun Watson
Per The 33rd Team’s Ari Meirov:
The Browns restructured Deshaun Watson’s contract today, as Field Yates noted.
His updated cap numbers:
- 2024: $27,942,678
- 2025: $72,935,000
- 2026: $72,935,000
- 2027: $26,864,000 (void yr)
Field Yates also annotated:
The Browns have restructured the contract of QB Deshaun Watson, converting $44.79M of his 2024 base salary into a signing bonus and creating $35.832M in cap space, per source.
Cleveland now has over $62M in cap space, the most in the entire NFL.
On some level, it was not surprising that the Browns restructured Watson’s contract again Thursday morning. The $63+ million cap number would have been the highest in the league by far this season.
It was decided to convert a large portion of Watson’s salary into a signing bonus, create a new void year in 2028, and reduce his cap number to $18,984,678 in 2024.
In the same way as last year, this will raise his future cap numbers. In 2025 and 2026, Watson’s cap would be $72.935 million. This is for a team that was already anticipating a cap overrun of $44 million in 2025. More restructures are expected in the coming years.
