The Denver Broncos made a big splash by hiring Sean Payton. There was then much discussion about what would happen to defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero. The Broncos were lukewarm on retaining him and allowed him to interview with other teams. Now, in a stunning turn of events, the Broncos are releasing DC Ejiro Evero.

Ejiro Evero is gone. Per source, Broncos are releasing him from contract. (1st by @RapSheet). While Broncos like Evero and hoped to retain him he wanted fresh start elsewhere. All signs point to Evero as Vikes DC. Broncos to interview Sean Desai, Brian Flores for DC. #9sports

    Broncos Releasing Ejiro Evero

The Broncos had many struggles last year. The defense was not one of them. If the offense was even mediocre, Denver would have likely been a playoff team. He showed a consistent ability to do more with less. The team traded one of their best players mid-season, Bradley Chubb, and the defense did not miss a beat. Evero seems to be a casualty of the Payton hire. Sean Payton likely wants his own guys in there.

    What Will Happen To Evero?

All indications point to him going to Minnesota. He interviewed there and the Vikings are in desperate need of some help on defense. Minnesota’s defense let them down late in the season and throughout the season struggled to stop teams. Evero’s ability to do more with less will be a welcome sight in Minnesota. The Vikings get an absolute steal as a year ago, no one could imagine Evero being on the market.

Will the Denver Broncos regret letting go of Ejiro Evero? Only time will tell. They got their guy in Sean Payton and the hope is he can turn the franchise around. It is hard to do worse than last year but Payton has his work cut out for him. For Evero, he gets a new opportunity to show just how good of a defensive coordinator he can be.
