The Denver Broncos are in the midst of an incredible start to their 2025 season.  Through eight games they’re 6-2 and sitting atop the NFC West.  Second year quarterback Bo Nix has not only proven he is a starter in this league, but a certified  star.

Now, they’ve added a future hall of famer to the mix.

(Breaking Report) The Broncos have added Marcedes Lewis to their arsenal for Bo Nix

Veteran tight end Marcedes Lewis has inked a new chapter in his storied NFL career by joining the Denver Broncos’ practice squad. Here’s a deep dive into the move, why it makes sense for all parties, and what it could mean moving ahead.

    What’s happening

    • On October 29, 2025, the Broncos officially signed Lewis to their practice squad. Denver Broncos+2NFL.com+2
    • At 41 years old, Lewis becomes one of the oldest NFL players currently in uniform — and if activated for a game, he could become the oldest tight end to play in the Super Bowl era. NFL.com+1
    • The signing comes amid tight-end depth issues in Denver: injuries to key players forced the team to look for a blocking-specialist. NFL.com+1

    Why it makes sense

    For the Broncos:

    • They’re dealing with injuries at TE (tight end). Lewis offers an experienced blocker who can step in without requiring to carry a heavy route-catching load. NBC Sports
    • His veteran presence and durability (appearance in a high number of games in recent years) provide reliability. The562.org
    • Even if his receiving production is minimal now, his blocking value in the run game and pass protection remains valuable.

    For Lewis:

    • After nearly two decades in the NFL (since being drafted in 2006) he gets the opportunity to extend his playing career.
    • He’s in a position to make history: if he plays in a game this season, he will set or join elite marks for longevity at the tight-end position.

    Career snapshot

    • Drafted in the 1st round of the 2006 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Wikipedia
    • Spent 12 seasons in Jacksonville (2006-2017), then five with the Green Bay Packers (2018-2022), and most recently with the Chicago Bears (2023-24). NBC Sports+1
    • Career receiving totals: 437 catches, 5,115 yards, and 40 touchdowns. Wikipedia+1
    • Holds the NFL record for most career games by a tight end (285+). The562.org

    • Will he be elevated from the practice squad to the active roster? If so, we’ll see whether he plays and how much role he will have.
    • Whether his function remains mainly blocking or if the Broncos try to use him in passing situations (though indications are that blocking is his primary role now). Mile High Report
    • The health and availability of Denver’s other tight ends: his playing time and impact will depend heavily on how the injury situation unfolds.
    • Whether the history piece plays out: given his age, the year, and the position, Lewis could rewrite some longevity records at tight end.

    The bigger picture

This move reflects several broader themes in the NFL:

    • The value of specialist veterans who can still contribute, even if their role has shifted.
    • How teams dealing with injuries often turn to experienced players to stabilize depth.
    • The notion that in modern football, blocking tight ends (even those past their peak receiving years) still have meaningful roles.
    • Longevity in the NFL is rare, especially for non-kicker positions — Lewis’ career is a reminder of how exceptional some runs can be.
