No one would blame San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy if he entered this season worried about his contract.
After all, the former “Mr. Irrelevant” guided the 49ers to overtime of the Super Bowl last season while playing his way legitimately into the MVP conversation and orchestrating one of the most prolific offensive attacks in the NFL, all while making less than $1 million.
Because of the fact that Purdy was chosen in the seventh-round of the draft, he isn’t even eligible for a contract extension until after the upcoming 2024 campaign, where he’ll collect $985,000 as the NFL’s 80th-highest-paid quarterback.
However, the number of zeroes on his contract or how his deal stacks up to his peers isn’t on his mind as San Francisco’s exhibition opener looms.
“Obviously, we have a goal at hand, going all the way, and winning, and finishing it,” Purdy said. “So that’s where my mindset’s at. To be caught up in the money and the stats, all that kind of stuff down the road, I’d be wrong if that’s where my mindset was at, and so it’s not.”
Brock Purdy Not Envious of Other Massive Quarterback Contracts
Purdy is going to cash in.
Especially given that through his first two seasons, Purdy has led San Francisco to an NFC Championship Game and Super Bowl appearance while completing 68.7 percent of his passes for 5,654 yards with 44 touchdowns to just 15 interceptions.
Many of Purdy’s fellow quarterbacks have already received colossal paydays, most recently Jordan Love and Tua Tagovailoa each resetting a quarterback market that had already exploded. Love parlayed an NFC Divisional Playoff appearance in his first season as a starter into a record-setting four-year deal worth $220 million while Tagovailoa put pen to paper on a four-year contract worth $212.4 million.
“That’s great. I’m happy for those guys,” Purdy said, via NFL Media. “But for me and this team right now, we’ve got to focus on 2024. This season is so long, and there’s so much stuff that you go through. So to get caught up in what the years can look like down the road or anything like that, to me, that’s pretty nonsense.”
