San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy got blasted by analyst Colin Cowherd, while also pointing out other QBs he believes are “overpaid.”
In one of the recent episodes of “The Herd,” analyst Colin Cowherd got honest about the controversial contract extension of 49ers QB Brock Purdy. For him, Purdy simply joined the list of NFL QBs who are overpaid.
“I like quarterbacks who initiate advantage, not benefit mostly from it,” Cowherd said. “And I’m not saying he’s a smart kid that doesn’t move well… I think Brock tends to be closer in talent to a Baker Mayfield 35 million a year, than Josh Allen 55 million a year.”
“And I’m not saying Brock is the only quarterback I think is overpaid. It does appear that Trevor Lawrence is overpaid.”
“I’m willing to pay $50-55 million a year to quarterbacks that lead their teams or are the offense… I think a lot of people can drive this 49ers car.”@ColinCowherd thinks Brock Purdy’s new deal should have been closer to Baker Mayfield than Josh Allen. pic.twitter.com/WA6u4Ftmwl

Brock Purdy’s five-year, $265 million contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers has sparked criticism, with many analysts and fans arguing that he is overpaid compared to other quarterbacks in the league.
While Purdy has been a solid performer, critics point out that he lacks the elite playmaking ability of quarterbacks like Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes.

How Could The Brock Purdy Contract Affect Seahawks, Rest of The NFC West?
While the contract with Brock Purdy secures the 49ers’ future at quarterback, it also limits their ability to retain key players like Christian McCaffrey, Trent Williams, Nick Bosa, and George Kittle, which could weaken their roster over time.

For the Seattle Seahawks, Purdy’s extension is seen as a positive development. The 49ers’ financial commitment to Purdy means they will have less flexibility to build an elite supporting cast around him. This could benefit Seattle in the long run, as the 49ers may struggle to maintain their dominance in the division.
Beyond Seattle, the Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams will also feel the effects of Purdy’s contract. The Rams have assembled one of the strongest rosters in the league, and with the 49ers potentially facing cap challenges, they could emerge as the top contender in the division. Meanwhile, the Cardinals, who are rebuilding, may find an opportunity to close the gap if the 49ers’ roster weakens over time.

Brock Purdy had a challenging 2024 season with the San Francisco 49ers, finishing with a 6-9 record in 15 starts. He threw for 3,864 yards, completing 300 of 455 passes for a 65.9% completion rate. Purdy recorded 20 touchdowns but also had a career-high 12 interceptions, along with 31 sacks. His passer rating for the season was 96.1, a drop from his 2023 Pro Bowl level.
