San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy got a supporter from a former NFL star, in light of critics casting doubt on his worth as an elite player in the league.

For former Green Bay Packers wide receiver James Jones, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is someone who is up there on the top of the list right now compared to other signal-callers. This is in light of criticisms that have been thrown Purdy’s way, mainly due to the recent high-value contract extension he got from the 49ers.

In his personal list, Jones even ranked Purday higher than other highly valued names like Tua Tagovailoa and Trevor Lawrence, but a little below Lamar Jackson.

“I think overall, the whole quarterback money is all messed up because when you look at the list that you show, sure he probably is better than Tua, he probably is better than Trevor Lawrence,” Jones said, via “The Facility.”

“You could put him up there with that, but he definitely ain’t better than Lamar Jackson.”

Still, Purdy is not “elite,” at least not for Jones.

“For the Niners, this is your guy,” Jones added. “This guy really saved a lot of your guys’ jobs because you missed on Trey Lance and you hit on your seventh round pick, and he came in and he played well. When you’re talking about elite money, you carry football teams. He has not shown that. But I think this number is right around where it should be for Brock Purdy. I believe he earned his money.”

Brock Purdy Being “Overpaid” Touched on by Analyst

In one of the recent episodes of “The Herd,” analyst Colin Cowherd got honest about the controversial contract extension of 49ers QB Brock Purdy. For him, Purdy simply joined the list of NFL QBs who are overpaid.

“I like quarterbacks who initiate advantage, not benefit mostly from it,” Cowherd said. “And I’m not saying he’s a smart kid that doesn’t move well… I think Brock tends to be closer in talent to a Baker Mayfield 35 million a year, than Josh Allen 55 million a year.”

“And I’m not saying Brock is the only quarterback I think is overpaid. It does appear that Trevor Lawrence is overpaid.”

Brock Purdy was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers as the 262nd overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, signing a four-year, $3.7 million rookie contract with an average annual salary of $934,000. After proving himself as a franchise quarterback, he secured a five-year, $265 million contract extension in 2025, making him one of the highest-paid players in the league. His new deal includes $181 million in guaranteed money, significantly increasing his earnings compared to his rookie contract.
