The San Francisco 49ers are out of contention for a playoff spot this season, and the pending contract extension of Brock Purdy has become a subject of debate once again. The 25-year-old QB is projected to earn as much as $50 to $60 million annually after his contract expires, and some don’t believe he is worth that much.
During Week 17, the 49ers, as the defending NFC champions squared off against last year’s conference runners up, the Detroit Lions. Even if this is a non-baring game for the 49ers, many demanded a good performance from Brock Prudy since this is considered a grudge match from last year’s NFC championship game.
Purdy was impressed with a performance of 377 yards and three touchdowns, but the glaring statistic that many saw was the two interceptions that cost them the game over the Lions, 40-34.
Both interceptions came from the Lions’ Kerby Joseph, and the Purdy’s late-game decision-making was put into question. One of the critics were former ESPN personality Jason Whitlock, who doesn’t believe that the 49ers would have to rethink if they would offer Purdy the lucrative contract.
“The San Francisco 49ers would be absolutely insane to pay Brock Purdy $60 million a year. Hey man, Brock Purdy is a nice quarterback. He’s like Dak Prescott. He is not worth $60 million a year,” said Whitlock on his own YouTube Channel.
Kyle Shanahan backs Brock Purdy after the loss to the Lions
The Detroit Lions came into their grudge match with the San Francisco 49ers and earned their revenge from last season, winning by six points. While technically, this is a non-baring game for the 49ers, social media has been exploding on Brock Purdy with his contract extension coming to negotiation after the season.
Coming to Purdy’s defense during the post-game press conference, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan backed up his QB’s efforts.
“He hasn’t run from anything. He’s attacked everything, plays as hard as he can… and comes back and grinds, trying to get better each week,”
In the 2024-25 season, Purdy has thrown 3,864 yards and had 20 touchdowns. He also had 12 interceptions, giving him a decent QB rating of 67.8. These numbers are pretty comparable to his 2023-24 season with 4,2809 yards, 31 touchdowns and 11 interceptions with one more week to play, but the team’s results differ as the 49ers failed to enter the playoff picture.
As of this writing, the San Francisco 49ers are unlikely to field Brock Purdy in Week 18 as they would like their QB to prioritize recovery over a non-baring match against the Arizona Cardinals.
