Brian Kelly spoke with the media today at noon at his weekly press conference. The Tigers were able to get back on track with a 65-17 over Southern. The challenge of SEC play will begin for LSU this weekend when they host Mississippi State in Tiger Stadium. Here were some of the key takeaways from Kelly’s press conference previewing the matchup vs. Mississippi State:

    On Mississippi State:

Will Rogers scrambles to find an open receiver
Mike Leach’s air raid attack will pose a challenge to LSU’s defense

“It is a precision offense, it’s extremely well-coached. There is a patience and persistence that you need on defense. It’s going to come down to our attention to detail and we’re going to have to tackle really well.”

Who Stands Out on Mississippi State’s Defense:

Tyrus Wheat celebrates with his teammate after making a big play
Tyrus Wheat stands out the most to Brian Kelly on Mississippi State’s defense

“From a defensive standpoint, the guy that stands out is Tyrus Wheat from right here in Louisiana. He’s all over the field. You’re going to see him in a number of different positions, whether linebacker, he can play a stand up and he’s going to be moved around.”

    On John Emery’s Return:

John Emery running down the sideline
John Emery will see the field after serving a two-game suspension

“He’s worked hard to get back into position, now he gets an opportunity. Let’s be careful now he’s been off for a while. So, you know, to put a lot of expectations, but he will be a part of the mix. Make no mistake about it, we’ve seen his capabilities in camp. We’ve kept him active within our rotation, so he’s ready to play.”

    His Thoughts on Garrett Nussmeier:

    Garrett Nussmeier slinging a pass
Garrett Nussmeier got to see the field in LSU’s rout of Southern on Saturday

“You never want a moment where you turn the ball over. He’s got to take care of the football and we had a conversation about that. He did some really good things and we’ve got to build off of that. When you’re in that No. 2 position, you tend to press a little, he doesn’t need to do that.”

    On the Secondary:

LSU Football: Tigers S Jay Ward's 2022 player profile
Brian Kelly has made a few adjustments in the secondary that have enhanced their communication

“I think the corners have held up pretty well. Greg Brooks playing back at the safety position has enhanced our communication. Putting Jay Ward down in the Nickel position fits his position as well.”

How the Offensive Line Looked Against Southern:

LSU offensive lineman warming up at practice
LSU’s offensive line showed strides in their game against Southern, but will be tested against a veteran Mississippi State defense

“I was pleased with the new starting offensive line. Expect to see that moving forward. Emory Jones also earned himself more playing time in the rotation.”
