In the first game of their 2019 season, LSU football blew out Georgia Southern 55-3. LSU, led by then quarterback Joe Burrow, would ride that momentum to an undefeated season and a national title under head coach Ed Orgeron.
That’s the last time the Tigers started a season 1-0.
Following LSU’s 27-20 loss to USC Sunday night, the Tigers have lost five straight season-opening games. Brian Kelly has been the head coach for three of those losses.
Did LSU football waste $95 million?
LSU gave Kelly a $95 million deal in the hopes they could avoid the two disastrous seasons Orgeron had with the team in 2020 and 2021. Kelly went 20-7 in his first two seasons with the Tigers. But in big games, like their season openers against Florida State, LSU fumbled the bag.
They did so again. This time against USC. LSU came into Las Vegas favored to win by 4.5 points. Early in the game, LSU looked like they were the better team on the field. However, USC head coach Lincoln Riley’s adjustments made his offense more lethal in the second half.
LSU and Kelly couldn’t keep up. USC kept their composure when things didn’t go their way early. LSU lacked discipline throughout the entire night. They made silly mistakes and committed costly penalties in the fourth quarter.
Frankly, Kelly didn’t have LSU prepared for the game. After the Tigers’ previous two losses to Florida State, one would have thought Kelly would have better prepared his team for Sunday night’s game. There doesn’t seem to be any improvement from a coach who has no incentive to bargain for a better contract in the next half-decade.
