On Sunday morning, the New York Giants announced they made a couple of important roster moves. They added a veteran cornerback and cut a recently signed quarterback who was getting little work during training camp. The Giants are also getting a rookie back to practice.
Theo Johnson is back to practice
According to a statement by the Giants, tight end Theo Johnson will be back in practice after passing his physical. On July 16, the Giants placed Johnson on the physically unable to perform list. Johnson is expected to have a large role in the Giants’ offense after Darren Waller retired this offseason.
The New York Giants signed Breon Borders
The Giants signed veteran cornerback Breon Borders. Per the Giants statement, Borders has played with several NFL teams since the 2018 season:
Borders, 6-0 and 189 pounds, played in 32 regular-season games with six starts for Jacksonville, Washington, Tennessee, Arizona and Chicago from 2018-22. Borders played in a postseason game for Buffalo in 2017 and has also spent time with Oakland, Pittsburgh, Miami and New England, which released him in January. He did not play in the NFL in 2023 and played in just one game, for the Bears, in 2022.
His career totals include 41 tackles (34 solo), one interception and seven passes defensed.
The Giants released Nathan Rourke
The Giants claimed Rourke off waivers from the New England Patriots in May. He spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Patriots last season. Per the statement, Rourke was earning many reps in practice:
Rourke was awarded to the Giants off waivers on May 7, one day after he was released by the Patriots. With Daniel Jones, Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito ahead of him, Rourke received few practice reps in the first week of camp.
The Giants need Daniel Jones and Drew Lock to gain as many reps as possible this preseason. Rourke should get another chance in training camp with a team that needs him to throw.
